YEAR FOUR - LESSON THREE

RAH - My Great Orchestral Adventure - Scared

Hello Year 4!

I hope you are enjoying learning at home!

How can music make us feel?

Music is used to tell a story in lots of different ways – in film and TV, in live

theatre, ballet and opera, and it can even tell a story on its own. It does this

by making us feel different emotions and creating different moods.

I have found a fabulous booklet for us to read, colour in and play whilst we learn

about how listening to different types of music can make us feel. You might want

to print it out to have the most fun with it.

It is called My Great Orchestral Adventure - here is the first page.

Please click on the picture to see more:

We will also be learning all about:

  • the Royal Albert Hall - a famous concert hall in London.  If we are very lucky, we might be able to go there and perform.
  • the orchestra - the musicians that play the music.
  • the conductor – the person who stands in front of the orchestra.  He conducts the musicians with his baton and keeps the music together.

There will be some writing to do as part of each lesson, after you have listened to the

music.  I would like to find out what you are thinking and how the music made you feel.

Lesson Three - Scared

Today, we are going to learn about music that makes us feel SCARED.

When you have read about the music, please listen to the three pieces:

Hall of the Mountain King from Peer Gynt by Grieg

listen to the music watch the video

Dies Irae by Mozart

listen to the music
watch the video

Ride of the Valkyries by Wagner

Do you recognise any of these pieces?

How are they different to what we usually hear?

What do you think?

Did the music make you feel scared?

Why do you think that is?

Which piece was your favourite?

Please can you list three reasons why?

Once you have listened to the three pieces, please fill in an Evaluation Sheet

for each piece and send them to your class teacher for me in the usual way

- a photo or a scanned copy will be fine.

Please let me know how you get on and what you have learned.  I would like to see

some of your pictures and completed word searches!

That is the end of Our Great Orchestral Adventure ... for today!  We will

be finding out how music can make us feel ADVENTUROUS next time.

"I found it very interesting and I thought that children learned about rhythm, by using body percussion without even realising that they were in a lesson, because it was so much fun for them!"

"I would highly recommend it!"

"I thought the song was lovely - there was a nice mix of playing the bowls, clapping, singing and actions. The whole idea of kitchen percussion is a brilliant one for lockdown but good in usual times too."

"The level of what you did/taught was perfect for their age and similar to things they do at school."

"The children all thoroughly enjoyed the session and were engaged throughout. They enjoyed having the opportunity to hold their own ukulele and learn to play along to some simple songs."

"The session was delivered brilliantly and the different stages were broken down into small sections to allow all children to participate."
