YEAR TWO - LESSON THREE

BBC Thunder Jam - Express Yourself

Hello Year 2!

Click here to see welcome video!

I hope you are enjoying learning at home!  It is a little bit different to being in school, I am sure it is just as much fun!

There are lots of different musical styles to learn about and listen to, shall we do some exploring with the Thunder Jam team?

We will be discovering music in:

  • Cities
  • Rainforests
  • Weather
  • Space
  • Stories
  • Ourselves
  • Superheroes

Let’s get started!

Lesson Three - Express Yourself

This is what the main lesson screen looks like:

Ben, Mia, Lottie and the twins are taken back in time to 1970s London in the middle of the punk music scene.  The group learn how to make DIY instruments from recyclable materials but panic when they find out that they have to perform at the end of term.

Punk rock star Poly Styrene helps the group overcome their fear when she asks them to join her on stage as her band.

Did you know?

  • Poly Styrene (1957 – 2011) was an English musician who was best known as the singer in the punk pop group ‘X-Ray Spex’.
  • Punk rock is a style of rock music which started in the 1970s.
  • It has quite a loud, angry style, often with shouting instead of singing.
  • Many punk rock songs have lyrics (or words) which tell angry stories.
  • Punk is seen as a style of music used for protesting against society and rules.
  • Musicians often put coloured hair dye in their hair or use gel to make their hair stand up.
  • ‘Punk Rockers’ wear lots of black clothing, tartan trousers, safety pins through their skin and lots of badges.

Did you enjoy learning about the different instruments that can be made by recycling materials that would have been thrown away?  Reducing waste by recycling is an important thing for us all to do, and to recycle something into a useful instrument it a brilliant idea!  I wonder what you could make?  Maybe with a plastic pot or bottle and some dry pasta?  You might need some help from your grown up with this.

Are you every worried about doing something - perhaps putting your hand up in class?  I hope you will now know that everyone feels like this sometimes, and it isn't so difficult to be brave, with a little help.

Well, that is the end of the Thunder Jam adventures ... for now!

I hope you enjoy watching these videos and learning about different music!  Please let me know how you get on.

"I found it very interesting and I thought that children learned about rhythm, by using body percussion without even realising that they were in a lesson, because it was so much fun for them!"

"I would highly recommend it!"

"I thought the song was lovely - there was a nice mix of playing the bowls, clapping, singing and actions. The whole idea of kitchen percussion is a brilliant one for lockdown but good in usual times too."

"The level of what you did/taught was perfect for their age and similar to things they do at school."

"The children all thoroughly enjoyed the session and were engaged throughout. They enjoyed having the opportunity to hold their own ukulele and learn to play along to some simple songs."

"The session was delivered brilliantly and the different stages were broken down into small sections to allow all children to participate."
