YEAR FOUR - LESSON FIVE

RAH - My Great Orchestral Adventure - A Mix of Emotions!

Hello Year 4!

This is our last visit for now to the Royal Albert Hall on our Great Orchestral Adventure

- and it is a big one!

Today we are going to see and understand how one piece of music can make us

experience a whole mix of emotions in the short time we are listening to it.

A mixture of happy, sad, scared, adventurous and any number of other emotions

as we are taken on the musical journey of a magnificent piece of music!

How can music make us feel?

Music is used to tell a story in lots of different ways – in film and TV, in live

theatre, ballet and opera, and it can even tell a story on its own. It does this

by making us feel different emotions and creating different moods.

Don't forget to follow the book as you work through the lesson.

My Great Orchestral Adventure - here is the first page.

Please click on the picture to see more:

What can you remember?

  • the Royal Albert Hall - a famous concert hall in London.
  • the orchestra - the musicians that play the music.
  • the conductor – the person who stands in front of the orchestra.
  • The conducts the musicians with his baton and keeps the music together.

As always, there will be some writing to do as part of the lesson, after you have listened to the

music.  I would like you to tell me what you are thinking and how the music made you feel.

Lesson Four  A MIX OF EMOTIONS!

Today, in our final visit, we are going to learn about music that makes us feel a mix of emotions.

We are going to listen to one piece today, however it is a big one!

Symphony No.4 - 3rd movement (section) by Mahler

Did you recognise and parts of this pieces?

What emotions did the music  make you feel?

Can you remember where in the music this was?

Why do you think that is?

Once you have listened to the piece, please fill in an Evaluation Sheet and send it

to your class teacher for me in the usual way - a photo or a scanned copy will be fine.

Please let me know how you get on and what you have learned.  I would like to see

some of your pictures and completed word searches!

That is the end of Our Great Orchestral Adventure ... I hope you enjoyed it!

Can you  believe that music can make you feel so many different emotions?  I think it is completely amazing!

Thank you for working so hard on this topic.  See you soon!

"I found it very interesting and I thought that children learned about rhythm, by using body percussion without even realising that they were in a lesson, because it was so much fun for them!"

"I would highly recommend it!"

"I thought the song was lovely - there was a nice mix of playing the bowls, clapping, singing and actions. The whole idea of kitchen percussion is a brilliant one for lockdown but good in usual times too."

"The level of what you did/taught was perfect for their age and similar to things they do at school."

"The children all thoroughly enjoyed the session and were engaged throughout. They enjoyed having the opportunity to hold their own ukulele and learn to play along to some simple songs."

"The session was delivered brilliantly and the different stages were broken down into small sections to allow all children to participate."
