YEAR TWO - LESSON TWO

BBC Thunder Jam - Rainforests

Hello Year 2!

There are lots of different musical styles to learn about and listen to, shall we do some exploring
with the Thunder Jam team?

We will be discovering music in:
  • Cities
  • Rainforests
  • Express Yourself
  • Stories
  • Superheroes
  • This is Me
  • Weather
  • Space

Let’s get started!

Today we will be learning about the many sounds of the rainforest

Lesson Two - Rainforests

This is what the main lesson screen looks like:

Lottie, Ben, Mia and the twins are taken to the tropical rainforest where they meet

Dame Evelyn Glennie.  They learn how instruments can make sounds of the

environment around them and shown how to feel music as well as hear it. The group

help Dame Evelyn collect animal snapshots by creating the sounds of the rainforests.

Did you know?

  • Dame Evelyn Glennie is a famous Scottish percussion player.
  • She has been deaf since she was 12 years old.
  • She cannot hear the music she is playing - she uses the vibrations of the
instruments to play during performances. She literally ‘feels’ the music.
In 2012, Dame Evelyn played at the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games,
performing with 1,000 drummers playing buckets and drums.
You can see the rehearsals here by clicking on the picture below  – it’s brilliant!

Well, that is the end of theThunder Jam adventures ... for now!

Did you enjoy learning about the different ways we can make music, and the many places and

feelings that can change the way music sounds and what you hear? Which was your favourite

adventure?  In three sentences, please can you tell me why? Thank you.

See you soon.

"I found it very interesting and I thought that children learned about rhythm, by using body percussion without even realising that they were in a lesson, because it was so much fun for them!"

"I would highly recommend it!"

"I thought the song was lovely - there was a nice mix of playing the bowls, clapping, singing and actions. The whole idea of kitchen percussion is a brilliant one for lockdown but good in usual times too."

"The level of what you did/taught was perfect for their age and similar to things they do at school."

"The children all thoroughly enjoyed the session and were engaged throughout. They enjoyed having the opportunity to hold their own ukulele and learn to play along to some simple songs."

"The session was delivered brilliantly and the different stages were broken down into small sections to allow all children to participate."
